This glossary is one in a series of reference works from the Foreign Broadcast Information Service. It supersedes and replaces JPRS-WER-92-001, Vols. I-IV.

The material that appears in this glossary was taken from publicly available works. If any user finds an instance where there appears to be an error and wishes to suggest a correction, the editors are eager to review all such comments. Most particularly, suggested new items will be most welcome. This glossary will be reworked periodically and a new edition issued when there is sufficient material to warrant an update.

For some foreign abbreviations, there is a preferred English equivalent (e.g., UN for United Nations), and this English version will appear in brackets behind the English translation. FBIS asks all of its translators to use this preferred version and urges other users to do likewise.

A number of entries in this reference aid are actually proper names, especially for companies (such as Agfa, BASF). In these cases the notation "name," followed by a translation of the German words, appears in brackets. The translation is supplied only as a convenience to non-German-speaking users; the abbreviation should be left as it appears.

Some entries are specific to a particular German-speaking country other than Germany. In these cases an abbreviated country notation will appear behind the English translation: Aus.=Austria, Sw.=Switzerland.
